TITLE/TOPIC:  Application Techniques and safe use of Herbicides
ORGANIZING UNIT/PROJECT: Cassava Weed Management Project
OBJECTIVES: To enhance participants knowledge and skills on application techniques and safe use of herbicides
COURSE OUTLINE/DESCRIPTION: Training will cover:
(i) Equipment calibration [Knapsack, Mist blower]
(ii) Herbicide calculation
(iii) Herbicide application on small and large plots
(iv) Safety precautions in handling, mixing, storage, transportation, disposal of used containers, Managing spills
(v) Equipment maintenance
(vi) Weed control rating of individual and total weed spectrum
(vii) Crop injury rating
TARGET AUDIENCE: ADPs, Weed Control Business Groups (WCBG), Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), Research Associates, Field Technicians/workers, Farmers, Collaborating Institutions, Cassava Breeders, IITA Agripreneurs, Agrochemical dealers, etc.
PREREQUISITE: Participants should have basic understanding of the use of herbicides and its application techniques.
TRAINING LANGUAGE: English
MATERIALS REQUIRED: Knapsack sprayers, Mist blower, etc. (will be provided)
TRAINING METHODS: Lecture, group discussions, field Practical, class exercises etc.
EXPECTED OUTCOMES: By the end of this training/workshop, participants should be able to:
• Know more about herbicides and its usage
• Learn better techniques for herbicides application
• Know safer ways of handling herbicides
• Maintenance techniques for herbicides equipment.
DATE AND LOCATION: April 21 – 23, 2016.
International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Oyo Road, Ibadan, Nigeria. IITA Conference Center.
TRAINING FEE: $500 or equivalent in Naira, CFA or Euro
This fee covers group lunch, coffee/tea break, course materials and certificate of attendance to be issued at the end of the training workshop.
Late registration /cash payment on arrival attracts additional $100.
DEADLINE: Deadline for registration is April 15, 2016.
ACCOMMODATION: All Participants are expected to arrive by Wednesday 20th April 2016, and will be responsible for their accommodation and dinner for the duration of the training.
